We suggest you familiarize yourself with our main tips and mouth-watering dishes. Now you don’t have to look for hearts to restore your health – this is one of the most significant differences between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and other games in the legendary series. Now, Link will need to put on his chef’s hat and cook up some delicacies if he wants to survive Calamity Ganon’s onslaught.

We’ve put together a complete and just-updated guide to make cooking in the wilds of Hyrule easier, as well as adding some of our favorite recipes.

How to cook in Breath of the Wild

As in real cooking, here every ingredient is of key importance, so the slightest mistake can greatly distort the true taste and effect of the dish. Now let’s move on to information about the cuisine of the Hylians.

There are dishes for which it is not enough to have only the ingredients to cook, you also have to find a pot with a fire under it – they are often found in many stables scattered around Hyrule. If you want to cook a particular ingredient and reveal its features, then use a regular campfire or find any place in the game with a very high temperature, such as Death Mountain or the Gerudo Desert. Simply drop the ingredient on the floor and it will cook.

In Breath of the Wild, you can cook over 100 dishes, not counting variations of the same dish. However, these variations greatly affect the effect that food has on your character.

Most of the ingredients are neutral, meaning they have no effect other than restoring one or two hearts, raw or cooked. First of all, you need to pay attention to the adjective before the name of the ingredient, as it gives information about what the ingredient will add to the finished dish. Below is a list of adjectives and how they affect the dish.

Categories of ingredients and their effects

Categories of ingredients and their effects

  1. Cold (Chilly): heat resistance;
  2. Electro (Electro): resistance to electric discharges;
  3. Enduring: extra stamina;
  4. Energizing: restores stamina;
  5. Fireproof: resistance to fire;
  6. Hasty: Acceleration
  7. Hearty: full restoration of hearts and 1-5 additional ones;
  8. Mighty: increased attack power;
  9. Sneaky: stealth;
  10. Spicy: cold resistance;
  11. Durable (Tough): protection;

It is worth noting that only one effect can be added to a dish, so mixing ingredients from different categories will not bring any benefit. However, it is possible to increase the effectiveness of ingredients by doubling the amount of ingredients of the same type. For example, if you create an invigorating risotto with one Stamella Shroom, it will return half the stamina to the hero, and if with two, the effect will be doubled. The ingredients don’t always indicate which category they fall into, but they give a good idea of it.

Sometimes a special ringing sound is heard during cooking, and Link is very happy with the resulting dish, as it is much better than usual. One of five random effects is usually applied to such a dish:

  1. Effect level increased by one:
  2. Optional yellow heart;
  3. Recovery of three additional hearts;
  4. Effect duration increased by five minutes;
  5. An additional 0.2 stamina bar (yellow or green) is added or restored;

These effects appear randomly, as it may seem at first glance, but in fact there are ways to get them intentionally. The first (and easiest) is to prepare the dish during the Blood Moon. Any meals cooked while the Blood Moon is visible in the sky will be successful and one of the five random buffs listed above will be applied to them.

If you can’t wait for the Blood Moon, you can use Dragon Parts or Starstone in your recipe to make sure you get a successful meal. But resorting to this method is highly discouraged, since the aforementioned items are extremely difficult to find and worth spending them on something more worthwhile.

Best Recipes

recipes in zelda
Knowing how to cook is one thing, but owning the best recipes is quite another. We’ve put together a list of what we think are the best recipes so you don’t waste time and resources experimenting.

baked fruit

  • Ingredients: any fruit.

It does not give a significant increase in health, but such a dish is good because it is simple and quick to prepare, since there are a huge amount of fruits in the game. To cook, go to Death Mountain and drop the fruits on the floor – they will cook in the heat.

Spicy Mushroom Skewer

  • Ingredients: 5x Sunshroom.

Grants a medium cold hardiness of 12.5 minutes. There are a lot of such mushrooms in the game, so being in snowy locations you can accumulate a decent amount of them.

Cools you down in hot places for 12.5 minutes.

Hasty Steamed Fruit

  • Ingredients: 2x Fleet Lotus Seeds, 3x Swift Violet.

Allows you to accelerate by dashing while walking or climbing. This is very handy when you are trying to activate all the towers with a small stamina bar.

Sneaky Steamed Fish

  • Ingredients: 2x Silent Shroom, 2x Silent Princess, 1x Stealthfin Trout.

Grants increased stealth for 10 minutes, which is more than enough time to infiltrate an enemy camp and kill all the monsters inside.

Hearty Mushroom Skewer

  • Ingredients: 5x Big Hearty Truffles.

This dish is good if you haven’t opened enough heart containers to defeat some of the strongest enemies in the game. You will receive 20 temporary hearts, which will be added to the existing number.

Tough Steamed Fish

  • Ingredients: 3x Armoranth, 2x Armored Porgy.

Perfect for strengthening defense and for winning the fight against the villains of Hailur.

Mighty Simmered Fruit

  • Ingredients: 5x Mighty Bananas.

Gives a significant attack boost and Mighty Bananas are easy to find in Faron. Also, by combining this dish with ancient weapons and armor, you can destroy the Guardians in half the time.

Enduring Mushroom Skewer

  • Ingredients: 1x Endura Shroom.

Cooking such a dish seems like a waste of time, because all it gives is a little extra stamina. However, this dish fully replenishes the stamina bar, so it can be very useful during swimming, climbing and paragliding.

And finally, the best recipe in the game

Hearty Fried Wild Greens

  • Ingredients: 1x Hearty Radish

This is one of the dumbest recipes in the game. All you need is one Hearty Radish and you will have a dish that will fully replenish your health and give you additional temporary hearts. And frankly, if you know this recipe, then there is simply no point in other medicinal dishes.

How to make elixirs?

Elixirs are an important part of survival in Breath of the Wild. These drugs are designed for very specific purposes. All you need to make an elixir is a part of the monster and an animal or insect. For example, to make a Hasty Elixir, you must combine a Hot-Footed Frog with any part of a monster, such as a Bokoblin Horn. Animals fall into the same categories as the other ingredients, although the action of a hearty elixir is different from that of a hearty meal, as elixirs do not restore health.
