Against the backdrop of a video leak from GTAVI the industry has been talking about how leaked information affects games and their creators. Former employee Ubisoft made a bold statement – a leak about Assassin’s Creed Syndicate changed the future of the series.
Recall that in December 2014, when “Syndicate” not announced yet, journalist Jason Schreier (Jason Schreier) published an article on Kotaku with unofficial information about the action. Former Lead Game Designer Ubisoft Stanislav Kostyuk spoke about the incident today in a series of tweets:
- If you believe Kostyukafter a failed launch Assassin’s Creed Unity The public greeted the drain very negatively.
- Myself Kostyuk did not deal with “assassins”, but colleagues told him that due to the reaction of the players to the Kotaku material management Ubisoft decided to take the franchise as far as possible from its origins.
The game designer concludes that the leak not only demoralized the developers, but also led to radical changes in the series – it turned from a stealth action game into a role-playing game. “All because someone wanted a couple of seconds of fame, and the website was happy to give them away for the sake of clicks”summed up Kostyuk.
On the ResetEra forum Schreier commented on the words Kostyuk:
Blaming the series for changing course is not a hugely negative reaction to Assassin’s Creed Unitywhich came out unfinished, but a completely ordinary report (we didn’t even show the video – we only described it), which was actually received quite warmly – this is perhaps the biggest bullshit today, and today there was a lot of bullshit!
Leakers and journalists are easy to scapegoat and blame for the industry’s ills, but I assure you, Kotaku is not responsible for the fact that Assassin’s Creed turned into an RPG series. What’s next? I will be accused of postponing the release No Man’s Sky?
In the comments on tweets Schreier added that if you follow the logic Kostyukthe franchise must change annually – leaks precede the announcement of each “assassin” since at least 2012.
In addition, production Origins – the first role AC – started immediately after the release Black Flagin 2013. “Apparently they [Ubisoft] went a year ahead in time to find out about the leak first”the reporter quipped.
