Publishing house Secret Mode shared the first gameplay trailer of its new horror game – Still Wakes the Deep on the Unreal Engine 5. The psychological horror was presented as part of the Xbox Partner Preview together with The Chinese Room (authors of Little Orpheus and Dear Esther) and Microsoft. There is no release date yet, but the game is scheduled for early 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
In Still Wakes the Deep we find ourselves on board an oil production platform, somewhere in the depths of the North Sea. You will play as a worker who is left alone among the dark, cold waters without a chance for help. Communication with the team is lost and there are no weapons at hand – only ingenuity and determination. And against us is not an ordinary storm, but something unknown.
It’s too early to judge the future game based on the trailer—too little was shown. The gameplay looks like an action-adventure game, like What Remains of Edith Finch; mainly due to narrow passages and hatches – a similar atmosphere. But the mechanics and animations don’t look very good for a game on Unreal Engine 5. The developers clearly still have a lot of work and polishing to do.
